The varsity volleyball team took on a fierce Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, but had no problem sweeping them in three sets. Coming into the season, the Mustangs were ranked second in Class 3A. The team didn’t have the ending they wanted last year so this year they are on a mission: to win a state title.

The Stangs would conquer Beckman 25-15 in the first set and overpower the Blazers 25-17 in the next two sets. The girls’ overall record would improve to 13-4 after defeating them. The team had a rough start figuring out where everyone would fit in at and what role they could play but now the that the Stangs are up and rolling, they are a tough to to compete against.

“It’s a good feeling to know that the girls always have my back,” said junior Catherine Yeoman. “We have made so many memories together already and there are many more to come with this group.” Yeoman lead the team in kills Tuesday with nine.

“We’re basically one big family. We’re all sisters and Willems is our mom,” said Yeoman. That’s what makes this team so special, their chemistry and experience playing together allows them to have faith in each other to get their job done.

“Our goal is to have fun but also bring a title back to Mount Vernon,” stated Yeoman. This program has a tradition and they always say “keep the tradition alive,” Yeoman said. “When that ball is in the air and coming down from a perfect set you just got to think… hammer time,” said Yeoman.  Mount Vernon takes on Anamosa at home tonight at 7:30, and the Mustangs will celebrate senior night.
