Mount Vernon Archery competed in the NASP National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, May 12-14. The Mustangs brought 62 archers and competed in 3 bullseye divisions and a 3D Challenge. Mount Vernon qualified 4 teams which is more than any other Iowa school. There were 39 schools teams from Iowa in both archery disciplines in the 3 age divisions. The National NASP Championships drew more than 12,500 archers and 595 school teams nationwide which makes it the largest archery tournament on the planet.
Mount Vernon’s Logan Kelly excelled with several individual honors. Logan is middle school boys NASP National Champion in both 3D and the bullseye competitions. This is the club’s first ever National Champion. Logan’s score of 296 in the bullseye competition was within the Top 5 boy’s score overall and earned him a spot in the Scholarship Shoot-Off before about one thousand spectators. His cool mental attitude under pressure earned him a $20,000 scholarship award, which is the top prize for his 5 arrows in the center ring. In addition, Logan earned an invitation to shoot on the National All-Star team for the United States at the World All-Star Tournament. This summer the World All-Star Tournament is held in South Africa.
Mount Vernon teams were ranked among the best in the nation and represented Iowa well. The high school team scored 3303 which earned them 70th, better than 70% of the field. Top scores from the Mustangs came from Nathaniel Barnhart with 283 and Sydney Ulch with 281. The Mustangs ranked 5th among Iowa schools.
The middle school team, led by Logan’s championship 296 score, was a 3305 and earned them a respectable rank of 17th, better than 92% of the field. This marks the club’s best middle school team showing at Nationals. The best score for the girls came from Mya Reyhons with 287. The Mustang team placed higher than any other Iowa school.
The elementary team scored 3093 and earned 26th place and ranked above 83% of the field. Top scores for Mount Vernon came from Walker Holmes Bilden with a 267 and Lainey Kelly with a 265. The Mustang archers were the top representative of all Iowa schools.
The team that represented Mount Vernon in the NASP IBO 3D Challenge included archers from all age divisions and competed as a high school team. The Mustangs scored a club record 1403 which earned the team a respectable rank of 18th which was better than 86% of the field and 2nd among Iowa schools. The team rank was also the club’s best showing at Nationals. The National 3D champion for middle school boys Logan Kelly shot 294 and set a new club record. Mya Reyhons was the top girls score for Mount Vernon with 281. Other team best were Collin Hallier with 274 for high school boys, Rachel Lochner with 250 for high school girls, Jacob Cannon with 257 for elementary boys and Lainey Kelly with 268 for elementary girls. Lainey Kelly’s score ranked 13th for her division and is the club’s best showing at Nationals.
Both Logan and Lainey Kelly’s individual scores qualified them for the World Tournament. The World NASP and IBO 3D Tournaments will take place June 24-26th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Mount Vernon had 10 archers hit their personal records.
