Picture this: Flashing lights all around, music blaring no matter where you are, pictures being taken everywhere you look, and lots of people dancing. Mount Vernon’s Homecoming was a huge success this year. Students got to the dance at 9 and left at midnight.
Before the dance, students eat at restaurants all around eastern Iowa. They have to ensure they get a reservation; otherwise, they might not have a place to eat on Saturday evening. Sophomore Gabe Grafft and his group ate at Barrel House, a restaurant in Marion. “We already had reservations ahead of time, so when we walked into the restaurant, we said our group name and were seated almost immediately.”
“Dancing along to the Cha Cha Slide was my favorite part of the dance,” said sophomore Kolter Flockhart. “It seemed like everyone was involved in the dance.”
Once students arrive at the dance, they greet friends who may have arrived in other groups, and soon enough, dress shirts are on the bleacher seats, and it’s on to partying on the dance floor. The student council had a variety of songs that were played on Saturday night. “I think my favorite song was ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’” said sophomore Grey Denes.
Junior Owen Wheat said, “The environment was amazing and there were a lot more people than last year; it seemed to me that everyone had a blast that night; I know I did.”
During the dance, many people were doing many things; some were taking pictures with each other, some were dancing, and others were singing along with the music. “Brand and Thede were always supervising the dance; they needed to make sure nothing would happen.” said senior Stanley Krob. “Some things might have gotten out of hand, but other than that, the dance was fun.
