2024 Diamond Sponsors:

State in their Sights

By Alyssa Maddocks

The shrill sound of the whistle cuts through the hot, heavy air of the gym at Mount Vernon High School. They are focused and determined–sweat drips on the floor as they quickly rotate to a new drill. Their hearts beat loudly in their chests as they visualize their future success on the court. These dedicated, passionate athletes make up the 2016 Mustang Volleyball team.

With many returning varsity players, the team’s experience and wisdom is not lacking. “We are definitely a very experienced team this year,” said senior Sydney Meeker. “Younger players have been a part of this team for two years now and will definitely be more comfortable and confident. We also have a large number of three or four-year returning varsity players.”

With the high number of returning athletes, the team has already established a sensible attitude about the upcoming season. “We have gotten a lot better at blending our focus and our fun while on the court,” said senior Katie Wycoff.

The Mustangs are confident in their chances to make it to the state tournament with their powerful senior leadership. “All of us seniors are stepping up this year as we know in order to be successful this season, we need to have good leadership, effort, and communication,” said Meeker. “We are going to work hard, pushing ourselves and each other, every day working towards our goal of a state title.”

Head Volleyball Coach Maggie Willems agrees, saying “Our seniors are hands-down one of the very best groups to have ever come through this program. They have high expectations for everyone in the program, and at the same time are kind, caring and supportive teammates. This is a tough balance, and so far, they’ve been great.”

A goal of winning state means players work to enhance their skills year-round. “We had several athletes play club volleyball. We have several athletes who participate in multiple sports,” said Willems. “We have multiple summer opportunities that our kids participate in–setter training, open gyms, Sunday and Tuesday night leagues, team camps and our own MVHS camp.”

The Mustangs will next face the Solon Spartans Sept. 6 on their courts.
