For the average teenager, jobs may vary from a grocery store cashier to weekend babysitter, but for freshman Clara Conroy, work is play, literally.

Clara is a talented cellist, having the opportunity to accompany wedding ceremonies and receptions for the occasional weekend job. “Seeing the weddings, and how happy the bride and groom look is a really cool thing,” Clara said. “I also love hearing the cello parts in songs; it can make beautiful music.”

Starting lessons at the age of 5, Clara can play effortlessly. “I can look at a sheet of music and automatically know where my finger should be on the cello.” Clara takes lessons at Preucil School of Music, in Iowa City.

Clara’s sister Emma (‘14) plays the violin alongside her. The bride and groom request the music to be played by the duet,  songs such as Canon in D, Wedding March, Arioso, and La Rejouissance are all common choices for the ceremony.
