Taking on Les Misérables

By Breanna Jones

“Les Misérables” is the challenging production our theater department will produce for the Spring Musical. From the large number of actors on stage at one time to the Tony award winning score, “Les Mis” is a complex , but well-loved show.

The show is set during an uprising in early 19th century France. The protagonist, Jean Valjean, tries to begin a new life by opening a factory under an assumed name after his release from prison, but he is continually being tracked down by police inspector Javert after breaking his parole. Valjean attempts to raise Cosette, the daughter of a woman who worked in his factory. The show is filled with iconic songs such as “One Day More,” ” Castle on a Cloud,” “Master of the House,” “I Dreamed a Dream” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”

“We basically have one or two nights to learn the music and blocking and then we move on,” junior Rory McCollum said, “but I know all the work we put in is going to be worth it.”  Despite the difficulties of the production, the cast still manages to make the most out of rehearsal and have the most fun they can.

“I love the atmosphere of the theater,” senior Taylor Sherman, who plays Cosette, said. “Everyone is working together to make one successful show.”  The cast’s next couple of months are booked. Rehearsal is nearly every night, except for Fridays and a few other days, either starting at 6:30 or 4:00 with the possibility of going as late as 10:00. For a week and a half in April, rehearsal is mandatory with no exceptions, that includes athletics and jobs. Members of the cast don’t see these rehearsals as mandatory or wasting time, they enjoy going and being part of such a large group.

“I love the people,” senior Jenna Reimann, who plays Fantine, said. “I’m coming to rehearsal even if I don’t need to because I love it.”

The performances are on April 16, 17, 22, and 23. Tickets are not yet sold.
