No.2 ranked Maquoketa defeated the No.1 ranked Mount Vernon, Friday in the state championship game at the Casey’s Center located in Des Moines.
Mount Vernon (24-2) started strong, taking an early lead in the first quarter with fast breaks and sharp shooting. Savanna Wright had 19 points and was voted captain for all team tournaments, along with Quinn Pershing scored nine and Taylor Franck rewarded all team tournament scoring seven. The Mustangs maintained control through much of the first period, putting pressure on Maquoketa’s defense and establishing an early advantage.
Maquoketa (23-4) responded in the second quarter, gradually closing the gap as their offense began to adjust. Maquoketa relied heavily on their senior center Cora Widel. Widel averages 15.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. By halftime, the score was nearly even, setting up a tense second half.
The turning point came in the third quarter. Mount Vernon struggled offensively as shots stopped falling, while Maquoketa gained momentum with consistent shooting and strong ball movement. By the fourth quarter, the Cardinals had pulled ahead and maintained control to secure the 17-point victory.
Senior guard Courtney Franck reflected on the season and her time on the team. “I’m so proud to wear Stangs across my chest for the past four years,” Franck said, showing the pride and dedication seniors felt even in a challenging championship matchup.
Coach Misener spoke about the team’s motivation and unity. “Love is what carried us,” Misener said, emphasizing that their shared effort and connection helped them push through the ups and downs of the season. Misener was named IBCA Region 3 Coach of the Year.
Courtney Franck highlighted the preparation and trust that helped the team perform under pressure. “Film, walking through their plays, just getting ourselves ready for what we would see, trusting in our team and no matter what happens, everything will be okay,” Courtney Franck said.
For the seniors, the relationships built over four years mattered more than those wins and losses. Courtney Franck mentioned , “I will remember the people the most. The memories I’ve made with these people are so special and don’t compare to the wins or losses. I’ve gained lots of friendships throughout this process, learned a lot from many, and will continue to become a better person because of this whole experience.”
Reflecting on the season’s outcome, Taylor Franck acknowledged the bittersweet feeling of finishing as runners-up. “It’s not what we wanted, but I wouldn’t want to spend my senior year with any other team,” she said, highlighting the lasting bonds and team spirit that defined the season.
