In the small town of Mount Vernon, there are many restaurant options. Family owned diners to fast food restaurants, Mount Vernon offers a variety of options. The town’s restaurants not only provide great meals, but show that we all as a community come together to support another. One question everyone is asking is, “Which restaurant is the best in Mount Vernon?”
In Mount Vernon there are a few different locations where restaurants are located. Whether it’s on Main Street or right off the roundabout, the restaurants that people enjoy are all over. In an email survey of Mount Vernon High School students sent in November, with 101 responding, the most popular restaurant is Si Señor. In this survey 45.5% of students picked Si Senor to be their favorite place to eat in Mount Vernon. They picked this restaurant because of the premium service, affordable food, the tasty chips and queso, and the popular dish arroz con pollo. “I like the food, and the service is very good there. My go to order is arroz con pollo, with a Dr. Pepper,” said sophomore Cora Martin.
The second most popular restaurant in town is Dairy Queen with 18.8% of Mount Vernon students voting for it to be the best food in town. Many of these students picked Dairy Queen because of the ice cream and blizzards, along with the chicken and fries. Dairy Queen has a variety of food from whatever type of burger you like, chicken strips, chicken sandwiches, different styles of hot dogs, and fries. The fries at Dairy Queen were also a very popular reason why Dairy Queen was voted the second best restaurant in Mount Vernon. “It has ice cream and lots of great food options, along with it being a fast and easy place to get food,” said sophomore Annabelle Smith.
In Mount Vernon, there are a few more known restaurants that students like going to as well, like Scorz with 15.8% of students voting for it to be their favorite, and other food options like Fuel and Yocks Landing. Although these are some smaller restaurants, some still enjoy the food and service in those locations. Oftentimes in smaller communities, the amount of people eating at restaurants are a lot, simply because most people like to bond with others around them; in this town, that is exactly what happens. So no matter how popular or unpopular a restaurant is in a town like Mount Vernon, most of the time people will still eat there and have a good time.
Furthermore, the restaurant Chameleons had 6.9% of students voting for it. Chameleons is located on Mount Vernon’s First Street in a smaller store. This restaurant is secluded away from the other more popular places which could be a reason why it is more unpopular than other restaurants in Mount Vernon. Even though it’s unlike most students here, there are still some who enjoy the restaurant. “The burgers are really good and you can get a huge variety of toppings as well,” said Everett Marshall, a sophomore at Mount Vernon High School. “They have over 20 sauces and all of them are free with your meal.” In addition, Chameleons is one of the few restaurants in Mount Vernon, so that some like this restaurant isn’t a surprise.
Overall, the survey results give great and valuable insight on how students at Mount Vernon High School view local restaurants and what about those options matter to them most in making their decision on what restaurant is truly the best. This survey understands what students value in their eating experiences, it offers a clear image of why some restaurants are seen as the best and how other restaurants should continue to meet the needs of their younger customers.
