By Emma Klinkhammer

On Nov. 22 after weeks of practice and preparation, Mount Vernon’s marching band packed up and headed to Chicago. Two days

later, they were marching in the city’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was broadcasted live on WGN. Besides the honor of marching in the parade, they also got to spend time bonding while visiting some of Chicago’s most prominent tourist spots. They visited Wrigley Field, The Willis Tower Skydeck, Navy Pier, and watched a show on the Chicago Broadway.

“I think we were all ready to go, which really showed,” said sophomore saxophone player Grace Krapfl. “We were told by other band directors that we looked professional and played very well. It was cool to see some familiar faces and hear encouragement on the sides,” Krapfl said.

Sophomore drum major Quinnie Rodman speaks of the band as a tight knit group. “Our band separates itself from others because there’s a family-like atmosphere. Having 100 kids who act like a family is not a quality most bands have,” she said.

The trip also opened up a door of opportunities for the band. “It was a big step up for us, it put us on a national stage,” said senior trumpet player Aaron Barnhart.

“The band has come so far in such a little amount of time and I’m so fortunate to be a part of it.” Rodman said. “I am excited to see what else we’ll accomplish in the future.”
