Freshman football lost a tough battle at home Friday night to the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks, 30-13. This puts the freshmen at an 0-3 record, losing to the Solon Spartans, the West Delaware Hawks, and the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. “We haven’t been playing how we have wanted to lately, but we look to get back on track next week against Goose Lake,” said Sam Adams, wide receiver and defensive back. Although the Mustangs hit an early rough patch, they were hoping to come out with a win.

The Mustangs sent the kickoff team out onto the field at the start of the game. They began slow in the first quarter by giving up two Golden Hawk touchdowns, as well as 2-point conversions that went along with each of them. To start off the second quarter, Noah Erickson made a huge interception, but the Mustangs fell short of scoring, and ended up giving away a safety and touchdown to the Golden Hawks. The Mustangs stopped the Golden Hawks’ 2-point conversion to end the first half down 24-0.

The Mustangs received the ball first to start the second half. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the first down, so they had to punt the ball away. A few drives in, the Golden Hawks found the endzone, but got shut down in their 2-point conversion attempt by the Mustangs. When the Mustangs got the ball back, they began to pick up the speed. Quarterback Kolby Volesky dropped back and found wide receiver Zach Baker open in the endzone for the Mustang’s first touchdown. The extra point was no good. After the kickoff, the Mustangs stopped the Golden Hawks short of a first down and took over on offense. Volesky had multiple complete passes to help the Mustangs march down the field. Nearing the end zone, Volesky released and found Baker open, who took it in for a 20-yard touchdown. The Mustangs made the extra point but lost to the Golden Hawks 30-13.

The freshman team has had some very tough competition so far into this season. Although they haven’t played to the level they have wanted to, the freshman Mustangs can turn it all around next week when they play Northeast Goose Lake.
