Whether it’s basketball, football, or volleyball, Mount Vernon High School students always show up to support their

school. Although there are many ways students do this, one of the most popular ways is to have a theme for how everyone dresses in order to visually display spirit and support.
When it comes to choosing a theme, it is decided by the barstool account on social media. Every year the account gets passed down to a new student. The decided theme then gets posted on Twitter and Instagram, normally the night before the game. If there is talk of people wanting a different theme, or they can’t decide on one, they post a poll and the theme that has the most votes wins. But with all the different themes, which one is the best? According to a survey sent out to the students of MVHS, with sixty responses, here are your top 5 student section themes.
#1 White out

This is the most popular theme by far. With everyone wearing the same color, it’s easy to tell where the student section is right when you enter. “White out It’s cute, I have a lot of clothes for options, and it’s simple for everyone to do,” said sophomore Cora Martin. Also, white out is typically the theme for the homecoming game every year. During this time students throw baby powder causing a cloud of white every touchdown or at halftime, adding to the fun and spirit of the theme.

#2 Pink out
Coming in second is pink out, usually held in October to raise awareness for breast cancer but is popular all year round.
This theme combines school spirit and a meaningful cause, drawing in large crowds every year. Whether students wear tutus or sweatshirts, the mix of purpose and fun makes pink out one of the most supported themes. With pink out, even the players get involved. For football, the players wear pink tape to add pink to their uniforms. Then for basketball this year the girls team got pink jerseys. “I really liked them,” sophomore Savanna Wright said, “it was really fun to wear a different color, especially pink.”
# 3 Black out
Unsurprisingly, another solid color theme ranks at number 3. While it’s simple like white out, black out is easy to do and is a fan favorite among students. “It’s just fire,” senior Mason Cossolotto said. And with everyone wearing the same color, the student section is unified which is why it has been voted one of the top themes specifically for big or rivalry games.
Before the games, many students get ready with friends. “One of my favorite parts of the games is getting ready with my friends. We listen to music, do each other’s hair, and we put paint or eye black on each other’s faces,” said sophomore Taylor Manternach.
#4 USA
A classic fan favorite, the stands are full of an array of red white and blue, this is another theme that attracts a crowd. Students wear a variety of different outfits, from normal sweatshirts to tutus, it’s fun to put together outfits to fit the theme. “For the USA theme this past fall, I wore my red and blue cowboy hat, a shirt with a bikini on it, American flag sunglasses, red white and blue swim trunks, and a red handkerchief hanging out of the back pocket of the swim trunks” senior Polly Hinrichs said. “I also had an American flag painted across my face,”
Junior Mavrick Schweer agrees that the flexibility makes the theme fun and exciting. “It’s very patriotic and there are a lot of different ways you can dress up,” she said.
#5 Beach
Another classic, Hawaiian/beach is always a theme students dress out for. Whether students are throwing beachballs around, or squirting each other with waterguns, this theme is always a fan favorite. Students wear a variety of different
colors, patterns, and accessories making the section very energetic. “For Hawaiian out, I wore a cute flower top and bright pants with curly hair and I really liked it,” Schweer said.

While new themes come and go, these five continue to define Mount Vernon’s student sections. Whether the theme is
simple or more complicated, the student section is always fun and energetic.
