Fourteen students competed at MVHS today for a spot on the State Academic Decathlon Team.
Because Jefferson High School, the host of Regional competition, limited the number of students to compete at Regionals this year, 18 Mount Vernon students were left without the opportunity to compete. This didn’t sit right with adviser Eric Butikofer, so he arranged for those students to compete at MVHS. Academic Decathlon President Harvey Kimble was at MVHS to manage the competition, as well as organizers Avis Gee and Tawnua Tenley and several teachers and community members who judged speeches, interviews, and proctored exams. The top three competitors of the 14 who showed up to compete at the Mount Vernon site were Khloe Rand, who placed first with 4061.2 points, Aubrey Husak, who placed second with 3,881.3 points, and Kyla Rand, who placed third with 3, 757.5 points.
