In Earth Science the students have a lab where they make a model sized stream.
“It gives the earth science students a chance to learn about the outside world in a hands on experience,” said Earth Science teacher Jan Henik.
Students get a long gray pan which they fill up with sand, spreading it evenly. They also fill up a bucket with water and fill a hose with water from the bucket. Once they have the hose filled with water they dig out a small channel for the water to flow. After the channel is dug they put a clamp on the hose to control the flow of the water. They have someone time the water flow for a certain amount of time and they then describe the traits the model river has and compare it to what a real river would have.
“I like it because it’s a hands on activity and I learn much better because if I take notes I space off easily,” said Freshman Lexi Flockhart.
