The Mustangs defeated the West Liberty Comets on Friday with a score of 56-25. After the Comets score on a fumble from the opening kickoff, a pass was caught by sophomore Blake Booth to tie the game, 6-6.
Senior Jack Cochrane then ran in a touchdown to extend the lead, followed by a two point conversion. After the Comets narrowed the Mustang lead, quarterback Drew Adams found Jared Booth for another Mustang touchdown, score 20-12.
With a 16-yard touchdown by Sam Moore, two interceptions, and a 60 yard touchdown pass to Cochrane, the Mustangs led at halftime 36-12. Moore totaled 13 rushes and 159 yards in this game.
In the second half, Adams set up Cochrane, Jack
Bootsmiller, and Matt Gearhart to score. The Mustangs only punted twice, racking up 531 yards of total offense. Adams completed 10 out of 12 passes, with 290 total yards and four passes resulting in touchdowns.
Hammer winners for this game were Senior Tristan Wirfs, Cochrane, and Hunter Horrmann, the three captains of this game. The win sets up a district title game at Williamsburg next week.
The win by the Mustangs at the Homecoming game Sept. 30, was a game of record-breakers. Mount Vernon won the game against Anamosa 62-6. Senior Jack Cochrane broke the all-time school scoring record for total points in a career. Cochrane breaks the record with 288 points, as he continues to score points for the Mustangs. Coach Lance Pedersen claimed his 100th career win after that defeat against the Raiders.
