Coming off the win against Camanche, the Mustangs showed why they are rated No. 1 in the district, beating Mid-Prairie 49-31 at home. Mount Vernon Sophomore, Tyler Elliott, made all seven extra points, building on his previous performance of 10 out 11 attempts against Camanche. “He’s definitely someone who is getting much better as each week goes on,” said Mount Vernon running back Jack Cochrane.
Mount Vernon started off early with their first possession resulting in a 7-0 lead. Throughout the second quarter the Mustangs managed to pull away with two more touchdowns and Mid- Prairie with two of their own, ending the half at 21-14.
In the third quarter Mid-Prairie began gaining on the Mustangs, ending the quarter with the score of 28-24 Mount Vernon. The Mustangs held the Hawks to one touchdown in the fourth quarter and scored three themselves. “It’s fun when you’re having success doing the things you want to do,” said Mount Vernon quarterback Drew Adams.
Drew Adams and Jack Cochrane were the offensive duo of Friday’s game with Adams and Cochrane connecting for two passing touchdowns. Cochrane also had two of his own rushing touchdowns and Adams with one. “It’s nice knowing that you’re doing something to help your team win,” said Adams.
Cale Snedden added to the scoreboard in the third quarter with a punt return for over 50 yards generating a touchdown. He also had a receiving touchdown from Adams.
Mount Vernon’s defense was also crucial towards the Mustangs’ win. Hunter Hormann and Sam Moore produced big stops in the fourth. With Moore also producing for the offense with 141 rushing yards.
Friday the Mustangs head to Northeast Goose Lake who are 0-4, to play a conference game. Last year Mount Vernon won 53-15.
