The Mount Vernon Mustangs bounced back after last Friday’s tough loss to Solon (35-14). This past Friday the Mustangs responded with a big win over the Northeast Goose Lake Rebels on Cornell College’s home football field in Ash Park with a big 53-15 victory.
The night started off with an impressive tiptoe catch by senior Mickey Hines from sophomore quarterback Drew Adams. As Hines was making the catch he landed awkwardly leading to him having to be carried off the field and sit out the rest of the game. That didn’t seem to stop the Mustangs, a long pass from Adams to senior, Tommy Hook, set up the Mustangs on the one yard line. That led to a 1 yard run by junior, Jack Cochrane, to put the Mustangs on the boards first.
The night didn’t stop there, Adams threw a long pass to senior, Connor Herrmann, to lead to another Mustang touchdown. The Mustang penalties kept adding up leading to the Rebels answering with a run to trail behind the Mustangs 14-7. With 32 seconds left in the first quarter another pass from Adams to Hook put the Mustangs up 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Scoring seemed like it never ended. At the start of the second quarter another throw from Adams to Rodman put the Mustangs up first after a blocked field goal. Cochrane then ran it in for another Mustang touchdown, followed by a Herrmann pick six. With 22 seconds left in the half Adams throws it to Hermann to put the Mustangs up 46-7 at the half.
After halftime was over, it was a quiet third quarter with no scoring but strong defense shown by the Mustangs. In the fourth quarter the Rebels score on a pass play and a successful two point conversion to put them on the boards. The Mustangs responded with a Cochrane touchdown ending the night with a big 53-15 victory over Northeast Goose Lake. “It’s always great to know you were able to contribute to the team, but it was only able to happen because of the great effort the line put in, it’s a team game,” said Adams. Adams ended the night throwing four touchdown passes and throwing for 305 yards.
