Last year, Richard Scearce, a teacher at Mount Vernon High School and an avid disc golf player, brought this sport to MVHS.
In the spring of 2013, a group of high school students, led by Scearce, formed the disc golf club. The club attracted 15 members that spring. These members would play every Wednesday at local courses.
After summer vacation, the club publicized a little bit more. This led to another 30 members joining in the fall of 2013. With the larger group, they decided that club officers needed to be elected. The group named a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and nutritional director.
The fall season was short, however the club started back up strong in the spring. With the new season brought new plans. With the growing demand of disc golf at MVHS, the club discussed plans to create a disc golf course on campus.
While plans for the course were being made, and funds were being raised, the club still used local courses for fun outings and competitions.
They ended this year with a school wide tournament. Anyone interested went out with a partner and played at the Cornell College Course. They then narrowed the field down to the final three competitors who went out and played a final round with the master himself, Richard Scearce.
Luke Moran won, while Bryce Cox and Sayre Pollock finished second and third respectively.
