MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon’s junior varsity boys basketball team secured a 57-56 victory over Solon Feb. 14 after Henrik Whitney knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer over two defenders in the closing seconds.
The Mustangs led 25-20 at halftime, controlling the tempo early with strong defensive pressure and efficient scoring. Mount Vernon moved the ball well in the first half and limited Solon’s second-chance opportunities to take a five-point lead into the break.
Momentum shifted in the third quarter as Solon increased its intensity on both ends of the floor, erasing the deficit and taking a narrow lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“We came out strong in the beginning and got a little too comfortable and let Solon slip ahead of us,” Sr. Jay Scieszinski said. “Around the beginning of the fourth I think we all realized if we wanted to win we had to kick it in and do our part, which is what helped us pull through in the end.”
Mount Vernon responded with renewed energy in the final period, focusing on defensive stops and aggressive drives to the basket. Sr. Landon Wilson said the team emphasized effort and execution after halftime.
“Giving better effort, attack on offense, and stopping drivers on defense,” Wilson said when asked about the second-half adjustments.
With time winding down and the score tight, Solon went to the free-throw line with a chance to extend its lead but missed. Mount Vernon secured the rebound and pushed the ball up the court.
Jr. Henrik Whitney said he anticipated the opportunity.
“The last play I knew I was getting the ball if the opponent missed the free throw,” Whitney said. “When I got it I was just thinking of getting to a spot where I have a high chance to make it. The rest was left up to my training and repetition that I have put into basketball.”
Whitney rose up over two defenders and drilled the 3-pointer, giving Mount Vernon the 57-56 lead and sealing the Mustangs’ comeback win. He finished the game with 13 points.
The victory showcased Mount Vernon’s resilience and ability to execute in high-pressure moments as the team continues its season.
