The week of homecoming was a wonderful time for the students of Mount Vernon High School. All wrapped up by the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night.
There are a lot of things that go into the Hoco Dance for the students, teacher, and student council. From picking a theme, finding a dress, teachers to watch the dance,
Freshman Star Wegner had her first Homecoming this year and said that the music was her favorite part of the experience, “especially when they played ‘Rich Baby Daddy’ by Sexy Red.” There were a lot of songs she knew, but that song was one of the highlights from Wegner’s night.
The most difficult part of the dance was finding a dress, Wegner said. She searched through a couple stores in the Lindale Mall, looking for a perfect red dress. Wegner said her friends did the same looking for dresses in person. “I looked for what seemed like hours until I found the perfect dress, the color and length I wanted.” Even though it was the most difficult part of the dance for Wegner she stated she still liked looking for a dress.
Before homecoming was a frantic time, getting her hair and makeup done, taking pictures, and going out to eat. Wegner said “I was worried about getting everything done on time and getting to the dance but it all worked out in the end.” Star had a volleyball tournament the day of the dance which crushed her time. Pictures weren’t Wegner’s favorite part before the dance, but hanging out with her friends was fun. She had dinner at Napoli’s Italian restaurant and said it was a nice place and a great time.
“Overall my first homecoming was a blast,” said Wegner.
Junior Brighton Bybee, a student council member at MVHS, helps with planning for the dance. Most of the planning goes too deciding the theme and executing it, and a lot of that has to do with the budget. The student council has to determine how much revenue the dance will bring in and how much they can spend. “Once all of the numbers with budgeting are decided the rest is easy.” Once the budget is set we can then decide what is in and out of the budget and get a theme put together.
We use the same staple song for the playlist because most people know them. Bybee said “We then send out a form and filter through the songs students send in to add to the playlist.” Determining if a song is eligible is easy, if it’s not school appropriate or doesn’t fit the theme it won’t get added. The student council tries to incorporate popular songs students suggest onto the playlist.
“The balloon drop was my favorite part of the dance this year,” Bybee stated. Even though it took a while to set up, it was pretty cool to watch in the end. “It is definitely something we will look to bring back again,” said Bybee.
Senior Brandy Hills said the best part of the dance was seeing her friends and interacting with everyone at the dance. “Getting to talk with everyone and seeing my friends was definitely my favorite part,” said Hills. The dance is a good time to see everyone and talk to new people and even catch up with people.
Texas Roadhouse was where Hills and her date went to dinner before the dance, along with two other couples. Texas Roadhouse is a popular place for couples to go too for dinner before the dance.
When band instructor Scott Weber brought out the trophy for the band competition, a lot of us were excited, said Hills. “We put in a lot of work and too see something that represents that means a lot” said Hills. I was especially excited when Weber brought out the trophy for us said Brandy.
