The Tissue Issue

Brady Ketchum

Life is like the school’s toilet paper, it’s rough.

Sub par, insufficient, below average, inadequate. These are all words that describe the toilet paper at the Mount Vernon High School. You may be thinking that this piece should be in a paper like The Onion, but in reality it is a very serious topic that affects many students and faculty in our high school.

From my conversations with students and staff, it became apparent to me that it is a well known fact that the toilet paper being supplied by the school is less than great. A sorry excuse for toilet paper and an embarrassment to the toilet paper industry. Garrett Hormann, a senior at Mount Vernon, who is very passionate about this subject said,” The toilet paper here is awful. There needs to be a change.” Elijah Exley Schuman, another distressed student, said,” The toilet paper we have now isn’t nearly as high of a quality as it should be.”

Teachers have enough on their plate without having to think about something as insignificant as the quality of toilet paper they are being supplied with. But at Mount Vernon, that is just another thing that teachers have to think about. One staff member said that they have to resort to bringing their own toilet paper to school as a result of the insufficiency of toilet paper. Another teacher said,” It is the cheapest stuff you can buy.”

Personally, I saw a major increase in the amount of paper used per trip from last year to this year. One staff member brought to my attention that the toilet paper has changed since last year and that last year, toilet paper would be restocked every three or four days but this year it is being restocked every day or two. One reason for a change in toilet paper could be to save money but when you think about, if you are using two or three times the amount previously used with a seemingly better paper, doesn’t it balance out? Doesn’t it make sense to have a better toilet paper which may be more expensive but lasts longer and less needs to be used as opposed to a cheaper toilet paper that doesn’t last nearly as long? Based on my findings and research, Mount Vernon High School bathrooms are not a place you want to be caught with your pants down.
