Fifteen seventh and eighth grade students from Mount Vernon competed with other teams from 18 schools around the state on Saturday at Coe College and beat the competition. The Mustangs, advised by science teacher Rob Hanson, will advance to Nationals, which are held at the University of Wisconsin in Madison May 20-21, where they will compete with 60 other teams from across the nation. Events featured at this year’s Science Olympiad included meteorology, astronomy, robotics, physics, technical problem solving, chemistry, biology, ecology, forensics, GPS studies, fossils, and ornithology.
Science Olympiad was founded in 1983, and holds 320 invitational, regional and state competitions, engaging close to 200,000 students on 6,000 secondary school teams, according to their website http://www.soinc.org/.
