A week of homecoming celebrations was nearly complete. Mount Vernon High School students got ready for the big homecoming parade Thursday. The marching band and various floats were in formation in front of the elementary making their final preparations. The pride of Mount Vernon “The Marching Mustangs” opened the parade followed by various fall sports teams, homecoming court and honored alumni.
As the football boys got on their float, some of the coaches and players yelled not to throw out all their candy before main street. “Even though we agreed, most of us still were out within the first couple of streets,” Keean Kamerling said.
Honoring MVHS alumni achievements has been a new addition to the parade. The Mount Vernon Foundation selected five people to honor and induct into the MVHS Hall of Fame Friday. These five people were honored in a student assembly at the high school, they rode in convertables in the parade, and were recognized at halftime of the varsity homecoming football game.
The parade marks a true sign of fall in welcoming the sport teams. The cross country, volleyball, and football teams all had floats in the parade filled with athletes.
As the parade went on, the community marched through Mount Vernon to the football field for the coronation of King and Queen followed by the powderpuff football game. Each year both teams offer a fierce friendly powder puff football competition. “The Pinks Ladies” and “T-Birds” were ready to play. They showed their toughness and drive Thursday at the game played at the old middle school.
“The best part about the parade is seeing all the people lining the streets to see the parade and support the floats,” sophomore Isabella Squiers said. Once again the parade brought together the community for a night of celebration.
