As the team wrapped up their first project of the day, they were tasked to double check a cart of student tablets. With the threat of COVID-19 ever present, it was imperative that each and every tablet was in working condition.

The team recorded every network port in the school into a lengthy spreadsheet. No port was overlooked as they made their pass over the empty building. Even a sound as miniscule as a keypress echoed off the school’s maroon walls.

It was vital for the team to finish the project before students returned from winter vacation. As the team of two walked from room to room, they ran an ethernet cable from each wall to the network tester. The bright screen of the tester sparked to life in the quiet, empty classrooms.

December 23, 2020 began with a walk through the long, empty halls of Mount Vernon’s elementary school. The main mission of the day was for the district's tech team to check every room’s wired connection to the school’s network. At Vance Arnold’s side, swinging loosely as he walked, hung the network tester, an IT worker’s tool of choice.
