By Haleigh Ehmsen–
Q: Where are you from?
A: Spain
Q: How old are you?
A: 16
Q: Describe your family back home.
A: I have a mom, dad and sister Lidia who is ten.
Q:What are some of your hobbies and interests?
A: I like to talk on the phone and be on the computer. I talk on the phone everyday to people back in Spain. I also like to travel. I’ve been to France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica, and lots more. They are all so different and interesting.
Q: Why did you want to become a foreign exchange student?
A: I wanted to be able to speak English fluently and I thought it’d be a fun experience.
Q: What were some stereotypes of the US you heard before coming here?
A: I heard that school was going to be easy. I was thinking of New York and California though mostly- the shopping and fashion. Then I heard Iowa and I was oh…
Q: What are some of the problems faced in coming to the U.S.?
A: I missed my flight and had to get put on another flight.
Q: Describe your first couple weeks here.
A: I hung out with Anthony and his friends. It was weird at first because I didn’t know a lot of English and I’m very shy.
Q: What do you do for fun back home?
A: Shopping, I love to shop. I spend a lot of money and my dad gets mad. On the weekends I like to go to dance clubs with my friends.
Q: Describe your school.
A: I go to a bilingual school in Spain
(Sara, continued)
where we speak French and Spanish. Some classes are in French and some are in Spanish. We have two classes and then half an hour break, then more classes. So we have longer breaks and we only go for six hours a day.
Q: How does school in Mount Vernon compare?
A: In Spain, we have more breaks. We get three weeks at Christmas, two weeks for Spring Break and almost every week we have a three day weekend.
Q: What are some things you want to do while you are here?
A: I want to make lots of friends and learn English!
Q: What is the most important lesson you have learned so far?
A: I am learning to be independent. I have had to learn to make some important decisions by myself.
Sara was on the MVHS volleyball team this year.
