Baseball has always been a favorite for the multi-sport sophomore Teddy Bonewald at Mount Vernon High School. As soon as the season begins every year, Bonewald is always ready to head to Cornell’s baseball field and play his absolute best. But at the end of the day, Bonewald says that baseball is more than just a game to him.
Bonewald began his baseball journey when he was 5 years old. From that day, he just couldn’t get enough. Bonewald’s first memory of baseball was from his T-ball team in kindergarten. Since then, he has played on a team every year up until now. Today, he plays for the Mount Vernon Mustangs baseball team.
Whenever there’s a game, you can typically find Bonewald playing as an infielder. Most often, he’ll be a second baseman or shortstop. Playing in the positions he does requires Bonewald to always be focused and dialed into the game.
After playing baseball for as long as he can remember, Bonewald said what stayed consistent all this time was not only his love for the game, but also getting to spend time doing what he loves with his teammates. “Usually, me and a couple of buddies like to get together and practice in the summertime. If it’s winter, though, we like to go to the LBC and practice hitting.” Bonewald shared that all the time they have spent together has ultimately brought them closer as friends. “I really wouldn’t have it any other way. Having the teammates I do just makes me like baseball even more.”
Even when the baseball season comes to an end, Bonewald said that it’s never truly over for him. “I often like to do whatever I can to still be getting better, even in the off-season. Whether that be practicing hitting or going to the lifting after school, I’m always trying to do stuff that will help me improve in all sports.”
Although Bonewald has found a passion for playing the game, he finds the same amount of enjoyment watching baseball as well. Being a Brewers fan for his whole life, Bonewald’s typical go-to games to watch are whichever ones the Milwaukee Brewers are participating in.
“Sometimes my family and I will go to MLB games together for vacation, usually it’s for the Brewers,” Bonewald said. “One of the things I like most about going and watching baseball is that it’s just something different from most sports, which makes it more entertaining.”
With many years of experience behind him, Bonewald knows most of what there is to know about baseball. His best advice is “Take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to you and interact with your coaches and teammates.”
