Right now, if you have an online class for the first or seventh hour, you can leave. But if it’s the second through sixth hour, you have to stay. That makes no sense. If we can leave at the start or end of the day, why not in the middle too? It’s literally the same thing. Same class, same work, same responsibility. The hour shouldn’t change anything.
Online classes already require responsibility. You still have to do the work no matter where you are. Making people stay for mid-day online classes doesn’t help anyone. It just wastes time. Students are required to go to the library, which can cause distractions because of other students talking in the library. People end up sitting there doing nothing, or stressing about when they’ll actually get time to focus. Letting students leave gives us a chance to manage our own time, get stuff done, or just take a minute to chill before the next class. If we’re trusted for the first and seventh hour, we can handle it in the middle too.
Some people say it’s about safety or attendance. That’s easy. First and seventh hour students already have sign-out sheets or parent permission. That works perfectly fine. Mid-day should be no different. There’s no extra risk. No one is asking for special treatment. We just want the same rules to apply all day.
Letting us leave actually helps everyone. You get time to focus, do stuff you need to do, or just relax. It also frees up computers and space for other people. It gives students some control over their day and makes the schedule way less annoying. The fix is simple: let anyone with an online class leave. Keep check-ins if you want, but trust us. Treat everyone the same. This rule is old, dumb, and doesn’t make sense. It wastes time, frustrates students, and honestly, it’s just annoying. It’s time for it to change.
