The Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country team destroyed the competition at Williamsburg Tuesday Oct. 1 with all four teams placing first.
The great weather and even terrain made the course perfect for the races. “The race itself seemed like it went by really fast,” Edith Dawson, a Junior at Mount Vernon, said. “I was able to challenge myself, and the weather was perfect.” Dawson ran a time of 20:24 placing 19th out of 120 runners.
The Varsity girls would place first with a team score of 67, and Solon in second with a score of 71. Individually Evelyn Moeller, a sophomore at Mount Vernon, led the race with a final time of 18:49 with a 15 second gap on Solon. Moeller broke her previous record by 54 seconds at the meet. An astonishing race with the team placing first of 16 other teams.
The Varsity boys team also placed first with a 58, second place ADM with 83. Individually Grady Olberding, a senior from Mount Vernon, placed first in the meet running a 15:52. Following Olberding was Dawson Scheil, a junior at Mount Vernon, who placed fifth only 19 seconds behind Grady at a time of 16:11. It was a phenomenal race with a total of 19 teams running. The runners felt confident “The only real competition was English Valley, Vinton-Shellsburg, and ADM,” Scheil said.
The Junior Varsity boys had a score of 27 with ADM following close behind with a score of 28. Individually ADM placed first with a time of 17:22. In second place Danny Dye, a freshman, with a time of 17:50. Of the top 10 boys half of them were MVL and the other half was ADM. Throughout all the races this run was by far the closest between ADM and MVL, but Mount Vernon had slightly better placement in the top 10 giving them first place.
The Junior Varsity girls team placed first with a team score of 33 with Solon again following in second place with a team score of 47. Individually Cora Smith, a junior at Mount Vernon, placed first with a time of 21:10. The next MVL runner coming in at third place was Sorell Telecky, a freshman at Mount Vernon, with a time of 21:28. Three of the top five runners were from the Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country team.
