Freshman and Sophomore Mustangs Beat the Panthers 21-7

As homecoming week kicks off, Monday night the freshman and sophomore football team got to play one of the first games of homecoming week.

The Mount Vernon Mustangs took on their opponent the Mount Pleasant Panthers and came out with the win, 21-7. The game was quite the battle when looking past the score. Both teams fought very hard even though it was not a close game. The Panthers battled all the way through the game and didn’t give anything free handedly to the Mustangs.

When comparing the size of the boys on both of the teams before the game the Panthers had quite the size advantage on the Mustangs, but the Mustangs looked past the size difference and didn’t let it phase them one bit. In particular one of the offensive linebackers for the Panthers had at least 3 inches on any of our defensive lineman. Our defensive linemen fought against him and his teammates with power, determination and strength. 

Jacob Yock (22), an offensive starter for the Mustangs, had an outstanding game. Yock had running yards as well as a touchdown for the Mustangs which significantly helped out the team. “He is always there to pick you up when you fall and is the kind of man who will run through a brick wall if he needs to in order to win the game.” Clay Simpson (25) a teammate of Yock’s said. Yock is a huge part of this freshman and sophomore football team and it wouldn’t be the same team without him.

On defense there were two significant players that made huge plays in the first and second quarter to prevent the Panthers from scoring. Clay Simpson (25) and Andrew Dix (58) both defensive linemen are very impactful when they are on the field. Simpson blocked a 20 yard pass from being caught in the first quarter and Dix had multiple quarterback sacks in the first and second quarter. Both of these players are hard core defenders and would do almost anything for their team to stop a touchdown from being scored.
