Imagine coming into school with homework that you had no time to do the night prior. You’re stressed because there is no time for you to get it done. This is why everyone deserves at least one free period
Everyone is busy, athletes especially. Say you had an event the night before. When you’re done with that event, you’re tired, and all you want to do is eat something and then sleep. Homework is something that doesn’t come to mind. You might not be an athlete; you could just be busy with things outside of school, like a job. Some students work later shifts because they have school until 3:15. They would get back at a late time, and just like an athlete, they will be tired and just want to sleep.
During a 7-hour day, students are already tired and stressed, and adding just a 52-minute window to do homework, socialize with friends, and complete any other tasks they need to do can be overwhelming.
Students with Kirkwood classes don’t actually have a class in school; the only way they could get work done in school would be through a free period. You might not have a Kirkwood class, you could have a big assignment that needs to be completed, and having a free period would make it easier to get a start on it or get a lot of it done.
Students are already focused on so many activities and schoolwork that a free period could give them a break from all of it. No rule says students should use it for schoolwork. They could use it for bettering themselves by doing things like lifting, clearing their mind, and hanging out with friends.
To conclude, every student is busy in some way, shape, or form, whether that be in a sport or with a job. All students need some sort of free time, and adding just one free period to their schedule could really give them that boost of energy or confidence that they need.
