The Mount Vernon seventh grade Mustangs lost their football game 26 to 42 on Thursday night to the West Delaware Hawks. The game began at 4:15 at The Mount Vernon MAC sports complex. The game lowered the Mustangs’ ranking by about 2 points in the conference, but the other teams ranking went up by 1-2.
During the game the score at the end of the 1st quarter was 8 to 6 with the hawks leading, at halftime it was 14 to 20, and at the 3rd quarter it was 20 to 32. “Although we lost, I know that our whole team would agree that we have improved our playing skills by a lot compared to our first ever game, and even our most recent game,” said Nick Bock.
They had one injury on Thursday, which was Bennett Graft getting his arm broken.
Some key plays were the other team tipped the ball to one of our players and we got the ball and gained some yards. Henry Dye ran the ball from the opponents 20 yard line all the way to our 30 yard line halfway into the game. Some of the Mustang’s key players are Quincy Nost at wide receiver, Cruze Vega at running back, and Gibbison Jost at quarterback. The player from the Mustangs that played the best was Cruse Vega because he got the most playing time and made a lot of their plays possible said Nick Bock.
The weather was great for football because it was partly cloudy, and about 80 degrees. The crowd size was a little above normal for the Mustangs. “This was the best we have played so far this year without a doubt,” said Elliott Micheel
Their team consists of about 50 7th grade boys. They have 4 coaches, Tom Meever, Nathan Namamny, Natan Beznardisic, and Mike Jones. They practice everyday after school from 3:30 p.m till 5:15 p.m, And on the weekends they rest and recover. Their practises usually consist of tackling drills, conditioning, running routes, form, ball handling, and on fridays they get to watch film, and do fun drills. During their games they play 11 people at a time on the field.
Next week the Mustangs will take on the Benton Bobcats at Benton stadium. “We hope to take home a win this time!” said Elliott Micheel.
