Last Friday night’s Mustang Football game against Center Point Urbana gave the Mustangs a 34-14 win at their Homecoming game.
In the first quarter, Center Point Urbana came out very strong and was able to take the lead with 6 points from a touchdown and a failed PAT attempt. Their defense was able to stop the Mustangs´ offense at the end of the first quarter and keep the score 6-0.
In the second quarter, Holden Hlavacek caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 6-6. Then with sophomore Brendan McNeal’s successful PAT, Mount Vernon took the lead of 7-6.The last play of the second quarter, junior Andrew Dix received a fumble. McNeal said, ¨the second quarter gave the Mustangs great momentum for going into the second half.¨
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Mustangs were able to score a 23-yard touchdown pass to Hlavacek and another successful PAT was made, which brought the score to 14-6. ¨The rest of the quarter, both of the defenses stayed strong and held each other off from scoring,¨ sophomore lineman Jakob Delany said.
In the fourth quarter, CPU was able to get an interception and eventually score another touchdown and made a 2-point conversion to make the score 27-14. ¨Öur defense was very tired and played slow which let mistakes slip up,¨ said sophomore runningback Gabe Graft. Even though the defense was playing slow, the offense was still able to score a 27-yard touchdown to Hlavacek once again. The final score of the game was 34-14, Mustangs for the win.
¨Everything is looking good so far for the Mustangs this season. We just need to make some small changes here and there with offense and defense,¨ said sophomore Jake Shady.
The Mustangs will be playing the Central DeWitt High School Sabers next Friday, Oct. 10 in DeWitt.
