The Mount Vernon JV volleyball team won 2-1 against Independence on Tuesday. During the game, the Mustangs had high energy and were able to overcome many challenges.
Starting the game off strong, sophomore Lexi Boren aced for the first point. This allowed the Mustangs to intensify the game right away. “Lexi Boren is a great player, her abilities and her volleyball IQ really show on the court,” said sophomore Ella Wilson. “She is also a great teammate, which makes playing with her really fun.”
The Mustangs swept in the first set with each player doing their part. Junior Alaina Pospisil controlled the front row by closing the blocks and attacking the ball, finishing off the first set 21-12.
The team carried their momentum and intensity into the next set. Independence had picked up their defense, causing MV to have to push a little harder with their swings. It was a much closer set, but Mount Vernon still got the W, ending the second set at 21-19. “Independence wasn’t our biggest competition, so our biggest challenge was staying focused and not playing down to their level,” said sophomore Maddy Paulus.
Libero, Avri Trumblee was very committed, going after every ball and hyping up her teammates. The team works very well together. “We learned that we can have a lot of fun while also working hard, and I feel confident with our team and how we work together,” said Wilson.
In the last set, Giada Borrazzo, from Italy, went in to play. She played middle and hit the ball with an assist from Emma Hoffman. She scored and the team went crazy. “The most exciting moment was when our foreign exchange teammate, Giada, went in and scored some points,” said Wilson. This was a spark of joy for the team and led to a fun end to the game.
JV plays an invitational quad 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, at Mount Vernon High School. The invitational will have some new competition, with Beckman Catholic, Prairie, and Benton all being there.
