Under the Friday night lights, the Mount Vernon Mustangs took control early and never looked back, defeating the Monticello Panthers in a highly anticipated matchup 50-0 Mount Vernon. Both teams brought strong crowds and a thrilling game.
Mount Vernon’s offense clicked from the opening drive, putting pressure on the Monticello defense. Senior quarterback Kellen Haverback led the charge in the first quarter, giving the Mustangs a jump and early lead. “I’m pumped for the game and all of us are excited,” said Haverback, “but I have to make sure the team is locked in and fundamental to catch this dub.” In the second quarter, Haverback threw it with all his might down the field, Hlavacek leaped up, coming down with the ball, making a huge catch and setting the tone for the rest of the game.

The Mustangs’ defense was equally sharp, forcing two turnovers in the first half and holding Monticello’s explosive offense in check. By halftime, Mount Vernon led 42-0 over the Panthers, backed by big players like Jakob Yock and Tommy Rhomberg on defense.
Monticello made adjustments after the break, showing resilience with a third-quarter touchdown to close the gap. In the third quarter Monticello made a big play, throwing deep down the field and putting some points on the board. But Mount Vernon’s defense stiffened again in the fourth quarter, sealing the win with a late sack and recovered fumble.
With the win, Mount Vernon improves to CPU Friday night, while Monticello falls. Both teams are expected to remain contenders in their respective classes as district play heats up. “We knew Monticello was going to bring everything they had,” said Mount Vernon head coach Brad Meester. “But our guys stayed disciplined and executed the game plan. This is a big win for our program.”
