The Mount Vernon girls track team placed second at state, tying with Gilbert high school at 58 points. ADM, Adel is the 3A state champion team with 67 points. State was held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines on May 22-24.
On day 3 of state, Evelyn Moeller won two silver medals, placing second in both the 800m and 1500m. Moeller ran the 800m in 2:13.94, which was a new school record and new #9 record for Iowa. Her 1500m time was 4:38.20, a new school record, new #11 for Iowa, and new US #85.
Caliana Whitaker won a silver medal for the 200m in a time of 24.82, a new Iowa #6 record.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Olivia Haverback, Grace Hale, Kara Swantz, Cali Whitaker placed 7th in1:48.92.
On day 3, for the boys, Grady Olberding placed 7th in the boys 1600m in a time of 4:22.16 (a new Iowa #40), and Chasen Caskey placed 11th in a time of 4:27.77. In this race, the winner, Quentin Nauman of Epworth Western Dubuque broke a 4-minute mile with a time of 3:59.60, a new state record.
Dawson Scheil placed 10th in the 800.

The girls track team poses with the Class 3A State Runner-up trophy May 24.
On day 2 of girls state track May 23, we saw the Distance Medley team of Lucy Wischmeyer, Kara Swantz, Eastin Whisner, and Evelyn Moeller run 4:06.92 to place 3rd. At the high school, we could hear shouts of excitement through the hallways as Evelyn Moeller took the baton in the 7th place position and carried it up to 3rd!
Lucy Wischmeyer placed 7th in the long jump with a jump of 16-11.5’.
Eastin Whisner ran 66.67 in the 400 hurdles for 8th place, and and Sorell Telecky ran 69.60 to place 20th.
The 4 X 400 team of Kiersten Swart, Eastin Whisner, Sorell Telecky, and Cali Whitaker finished 9th.
In the 4 X 100 prelim, Lucy Wischmeyer, Kara Swantz, Olivia Haverback, Grace Hale did not qualify for finals. Libby Dix placed 16th in the shot put.
For boys state track day two on May 23:
Colin Bentley, Logan Stanerson, Holden Hlavacek, and Grady Olberding placed 6th in the Distance Medley Relay.
Holden Hlavacek, Dawson Scheil, Erik Lamb, and Jaks Lee ran 3:29.70 in the 4×400.
