The city of Mount Vernon is known for its cozy charm and inviting atmosphere. With a wide variety of establishments, there’s something for everyone to enjoy—gift shops, antique stores, restaurants, crystal shops, yarn boutiques and more.
Students frequently report that residents love these local spots because of their warm, homey environments. “My favorite places to visit have been Fuel, Silver Spider, and any of the antique shops! I think uptown MV feels less like ‘typical Iowa,’” said Effie Johnson, a senior at Mount Vernon.
Silver Spider, a gift shop located in uptown, is owned by Anne Silva and offers an ever-changing selection of items including women’s clothing, accessories, books, toys and novelty gifts. Silver Spider has been part of the Mount Vernon strip for some time, the shop is filled with memories for many students. When you walk in, it’s hard to know where to look first—there’s something in every nook and cranny. That’s part of what makes Silver Spider so beloved by locals: it’s nearly impossible to leave without finding something you like.
According to Mount Vernon High School students, the top five places to visit uptown are:
- Silver Spider
- Fuel Art & Espresso
- Scorz Bar & Grill
- White Tree
- Chameleon’s Pub & Grub
Mount Vernon provides a wide range of items, food, and activities for everyone to explore and enjoy. Fuel Art & Espresso is a popular hangout for students—you’ll often spot someone sporting a Fuel hoodie at school, or sipping coffee with friends. “I love going to Fuel with my friends. It’s such a homey space, and everyone there is so friendly,” said Bella Hasley, a senior.
Mount Vernon’s food scene is also a big draw. Scorz Bar & Grill tends to attract more adults, likely due to the bar, but students still enjoy the food. Meanwhile, White Tree, a newer addition to uptown, has quickly gained popularity for its fresh goodies and offerings.
Effie Johnson, who transferred to Mount Vernon three years ago, said she’s loved getting to know the community. “I love talking to the ladies who run Wren and Purl. Getting shortbread samples downstairs before going up to get yarn is such a fun experience, and I love that we have a ‘niche’ thing—like real animal yarn—so close to real people,” Johnson said.
A strong variety of local spots helps make Mount Vernon a close-knit community. These places offer more than just products—they create space for connection, friendship, and discovery.
