This year’s Powderpuff game that everyone’s been waiting for took place on Thursday, Sept. 25 between the senior and sophomore Mermaids, and the junior and freshman Pirates. The game began with the Pirates in control of the ball for almost the entirety of the game which they did not let up, resulting in them winning 21-14.
From last year’s junior and freshman win, the seniors and sophomores were looking to sweep their opponents out of the water again. “Our team was determined that we had better players and coaches than the Pirates so therefore we had to get the dub,” senior coach Kael Riniker said.
As the game progressed and the score got closer it became clear to the Mermaids that the Pirates were not going down without a fair fight. “The thing we worked on the most was run plays because our players couldn’t catch the ball,” Mermaids head coach Joe Briesemeister said. “We also put in the athletes that stood out from the other players on the field because we knew they could do something big that could impact the score on the other team.” That’s exactly what happened as every player got to play on the field that night, and each individual gave their team everything they had on both offense and defense.
“I thought Taylor and Courtney Franck both did a phenomenal job and impacted our team due to their speed and Courtney’s throwing ability,” junior coach Caleb Keegan said. The Franck twins made big plays on offense and defense such as Courtney throwing Taylor a pass resulting in a seventy yard touchdown for the Pirates, and Taylor being a safety on defense making sure nobody gets behind her. Both twins were playing their absolute best and scored touchdowns during the game.
Halfway through the game, Taylor was cleated on the leg with metal softball cleats someone on the opposing team was wearing, taking her out of the game for one quarter to get bandaged up and stop the bleeding. “She was the biggest impact on the team because of how many yards she ran that night and nobody was able to catch her,” junior quarterback Courtney Franck said.
