As the Mount Vernon Mustangs gear up for a new season, all eyes are on senior wide receiver and cornerback, Watson Krob. Known for his unique playstyle, Krob is not just focused on himself but also on the team’s success.
During the summer, Krob focused much time into preparing for the new season. Some things he has been doing include practicing routes, working on catching skills, and closely working with the new starting quarterback Kellen Haverback.
Mount Vernon football Alumni also helped out with summer training. Some of the familiar names on the field were Owen Brase, Henry Ryan, Brady Ketchum, Caden Stimmel, Colin Swantz, and Joey Rhomberg, which has helped Krob improve a lot for the season.
During June the team’s practices were intense. They would practice five days a week, dedicating 2-3 hours a day to drills, running through plays, and focusing on skills for their positions. They have also been focusing a lot of time on analyzing film and participating in chalk talks.
Although Krob and the Mustangs have spent much time on improving themselves they still have challenges ahead of them. “We need to take one game at a time and not overlook any team,” said Watson.
This season is very different from last season as there is a new head coach for the Mustangs, Brad Meester. The leadership of the team is also very different this year as last year’s seniors graduated. It is now the job of Krob and the rest of the new senior class to step up and lead the rest of the Mustangs. Especially as this year is the biggest it has ever been with the new freshmen class joining the team.
Additionally, the team is adjusting to key changes in the roster. They should learn from early mistakes and improve so they’rethere ready when it matters the most during the playoffs. Krob emphasized the importance of not being afraid to fail early in the season, using it as a chance tothe improve and be better for the high stake games later on in the season.
Looking ahead, Krob´s personal goals for the season are a little ambitious but attainable. He´s looking for 1,000 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns, 60 receiptions, and 3 interceptions. But Krob is not just looking for individual success. Krob said “Being the best teammate and leader matters the most.”
