Brighton Bybee is in his second year as a member of the Student Council. “ I joined because it was something new to me,” he said, “and I just wanted to try it.”
The Student Council is a vital part of Mount Vernon High School because it helps decide where funds go and set up events. “My favorite thing we’ve worked on is the 2023 homecoming,” Bybee, a junior, said. He explained that homecoming was the first big thing he worked on while on student council. Last year the student council raised the prices to get into homecoming.
“That year the dance raised more money than it did in the past few years.” Bybee said that it was fun because of the risk of changing the prices and seeing how that would maybe affect attendance. Bybee said that seeing the final product at the end was what made him enjoy it the most. He was happy with how well they organized it and how many people came to it.
The process of planning out the dance was very simple. Bybee said first they make a big list of ideas, then decide which ones are doable. After they come up with the list they all take a vote on what ones they want to do. Once they take the vote they start to plan out how they’re gonna do whatever project they chose.
Bybee is very proud of all the help the student council does for the community. “ We don’t just help the school, but also the community.” An example of this is the can drive they did last year for people who needed or couldn’t afford it. They also help decide what to do with the funds.
Bybee’s favorite part of the student council is going over all the ideas with the other members during their meetings. Bybee says that the council has helped him learn to work with others better, especially understanding that everyone’s ideas should be listened to.
