Many people in high school have never been out of the country. Lydia, 16, was a sophomore when she went on a J-term class trip to Europe last year. The bustling cities and the smell of fresh bread bring a sense of warmth to Paris, but that was just one stop on the month-long journey with her classmates.
Seeing different parts of the world is an amazing experience, but can be costly. The cost of going to Europe was around $4,000. She took on several jobs to pay for the trip, including working as a lifeguard and doing chores around the house, while also receiving donations from friends and family.
Throughout the trip, the group traveled by bus, staying in a variety of hotels. They would get a glimpse of the new cultures and hospitality through the amazing food. They visited London, Paris, Milan, Rome, and Florence. She felt each city was unique and exciting, though Florence in particular, was special. She said, “The other places were intimidating, but Florence felt more comfortable than the other cities.”
Lydia’s month-long European tour was more than just a list of places; it was a journey filled with new experiences from the streets of London to the Renaissance art of Florence. She learned about history and the invaluable experience of exploring Europe.
