It’s a brisk Saturday morning, dew lying untouched on the green autumn grass. There is a faint clinking in the distance, the unmistakable sound of hard plastic banging against solid metal. Kaleb Coon stands at the tee box, ready to add another item to his list of athletic pursuits. This time, it’s frisbee golf. Coon, along with many others across the nation have taken up this old but re-emerging sport.
Frisbee golf is a pretty simple game, it involves getting a plastic disc into a metal basket in as few throws as possible. But for Coon, a senior, frisbee golf is more than this. It allows him to get outside, enjoy nature, and compete with friends in a casual competition.
Coon has participated in a multitude of sports throughout his high school career. From track, to wrestling, to football. Seeing success every step of the way.
Like many, Coon was introduced to frisbee golf through his family. When he was younger his uncle took him out to play at the Quarry, and he always had fun. A few months ago, his uncle took him out to play again and he remembered how much he enjoyed it. He asked some of his friends if they wanted to play, and they had fun as well.
Coon and his friends like playing different courses, and are always looking for the next course to play. “It’s always fun to try a new place because these courses are usually in really cool places, like sometimes they’re in the woods or just next to a river”.
Coon has played mostly at the Quarry course here in Mt. Vernon, but he’s also played at a few other courses in the area, including the University of Iowa Campus course. Coon said that his best score was at the Quarry when he shot a 31, which is 7 under par. He hopes to break this record soon and is still working on his game to try and improve.
He said that the most important thing for any new player is to remember that you will mess up, and that you can’t be scared to mess up because even if you’re playing with people who are more experienced, they also had to start out at one point too. So even though you might not be able to keep up with them, don’t be discouraged, and always keep trying.
