MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — As winter wraps its icy fingers around the region, Mount Vernon senior Tait Rentschler is not one to retreat indoors. Instead, he embraces the chill, seeking thrills on his snowmobile.
Rentschler’s venture into snowmobiling was kindled by friends and family, cultivating a curiosity that evolved into a deep-seated passion. “So a couple of my buddies got snowmobiles one year, and I was like, winter, there’s not much to do, so I thought, that sounds fun to me. My uncle has been into snowmobiling for a long time. I went out and bought an old cheap snowmobile, and it got me into riding,” he shared.
His snowmobiling journey evolved over time, progressing from a modest, budget-friendly snowmobile to a more robust 800cc snowmobile. “I have had three so far; now, I’m riding a 2015 800cc snowmobile,” Rentschler mentioned, highlighting the dynamic nature of his experience with the evolving machines.
Engaging with the local snowmobiling community, Rentschler found a sense of connection and shared responsibility. “There is a decent-sized community around here. There is a club called the Snow Drifters around here. They take care of the trails and do all the maintenance,” he explained, showing the collaborative effort within the dedicated community.
Beyond the adrenaline rush and the mechanical intricacies of snowmobiles, Rentschler values the social aspect of the sport. “It’s just something to do to pass the winter months around here. You know there’s not a whole lot to do in the winter. It’s a good hobby to have with friends and family,” Rentschler remarked, detailing the communal enjoyment that snowmobiling brings.
For those contemplating joining the snowmobiling hobby, Rentschler offered words of encouragement. “I think it’s a good idea. I mean, you can’t always guarantee snow; that’s the only thing to be scared about. but when I went out and bought a cheap snowmobile and rode it a few times I was hooked,” he stated, showing that getting into snowmobiling doesn’t have to be extravagant, or expensive.
Even with the potential risks, Rentschler concluded, “It’s a fun hobby. I mean, it can be dangerous, and you know you just have to be careful when you’re out riding, but it’s fun. It’s like riding a jet ski or a motorcycle, just on snow. “In the heart of winter, Tait Rentschler finds joy, camaraderie, and adventure on his snowmobile, leaving an indelible mark on the snow-covered trails.
