  1. Congratulations to Ryan Clark, you are the next Mustang of the Week! Enjoy parking privileges and cutting to the front of the lunch line next week, Ryan. Students, nominate one of your classmates to be the Mustang of the Week by picking up a nomination form in Mrs. Massey’s room.
  2. The spring football meeting is on Wednesday, April 26, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the district auditorium.
  3. All Thespian points for this year and troupe leadership applications for next year are due by Friday. See Mr. Stephens with questions.
  4. Tickets are available in the office for this weekend’s final performances of The Drowsy Chaperone. Don’t miss out on this hilarious show!
  5. If you’re interested in being a student director for the fall play, please see Mr. Stephens.
  6. The Mount Vernon Prom Committee will be selling tickets the remainder of this week during lunch.  Tickets are $25 for couples and $15 for singles.  Sign up in the office if you have a guest who does not attend Mount Vernon school.  Finally, the Grand March has been cancelled.
  7. There will be a 12:30 early dismissal on Wednesday.  Because there will be a preview of The Drowsy Chaperone that morning, classes will be 22 minutes long.

  3. Students interested in volunteering at the elementary school’s Mini Dance Marathon from 6-8 PM on Friday, April 21, should contact Ms. Baron. You can earn Pay it Forward hours.
  4. FIDGET CUBES are available for sale in Mr. Murray’s room. They are $17 each and quantities are limited.First come, first served!
  5. The Robotics Club parent/student meeting is tonight at 7:00pm in the HS Library.
  6. If you’re looking for a part time job at US Cellular, see Ms. Baron.
  7. Students taking the ACT this Saturday should remember to bring pencils, your ticket, your ID, and leave your cellphone in your car. Please arrive by 7:45 am at the latest.
  8. Mrs. McCollum will do some ACT review during MTSS this week.  Students, if you sign up outside her room before lunch on Friday, she will print a practice ACT test for you.  If you don’t sign up, you are still welcome but Mrs. McCollum won’t have supplies for you.

Juniors and seniors:  Registration for Post Prom will begin in the office on Monday, April 10.  Register early to guarantee your Post Prom t-shirt.  New this year:  There will be a separate sign-up in the office for those wishing to participate in an “Escape Room”, which is an experience you WON’T want to miss – sign up early as space will be limited to the first 80 students.  If more than 80 are interested, a wait list will be available.

  2. Anyone 14 and older interested in working as a cashier or lifeguard at the Mount Vernon pool this summer must PLEASE turn in your application to MV City Hall by Wednesday, April 5.
  3. Saturday, April 1st (tomorrow) is Mount Vernon/Lisbon Night at the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.  Mount Vernon/Lisbon residents can save $4 per ticket.  If you’re interested, please stop by the office for more information.

1. The boys’ track athlete/parent meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 in the HS Commons. If you are unable to attend, see Coach Whitman for information.

  1. Students should be out of the building today by 12:45.
  1. No girls’ track workout today due to the early dismissal.  The next one will be after school on Friday.
  2. All senior boys’ track athletes should meet in Coach Whitman’s room during the first part of lunch on Thursday.
  3. The Science Olympiad team will take a team photo at the beginning of practice on Thursday at 3:30. Be there to be in the team photo!
  4. Students, if you received a note to complete your CPR instruction, please see Nurse Linda today to sign up for your training date and time.
  5. The Social Justice Club will meet tomorrow morning at 7:40 in Mrs. Erickson’s room.  All are welcome as we plan events for spring semester.
  6. Audition packets for the spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, are now available outside Mr. Stephens’ classroom.
  7. There will be new procedures in place for 8th Block on Fridays:
  • The claiming process will not change, and seniors still get to leave unless they are claimed.
  • 9th and 10th graders must choose one of their current teachers’ classrooms to be in during MTSS time, even if they are not claimed.
  • 11th grade students will be able to choose free time in the commons or library if they are not claimed and as long as they are not being disruptive
  • Check in time will become an MTSS Home Room (HR), and will be extended to 20 minutes; Skinnies will be 30 minutes each
  • The PC lab downstairs will be monitored by Mrs. Tenley, and it will be for academic purposes only. Teachers can send students there to do test retakes.
  • In HR, students are to work on assignments or read. Teachers will use the time to individually guide students (9th/10th graders and those with Ds or Fs) to the appropriate room for MTSS time if they have not been claimed.
  • After HR, students will be dismissed to MTSS Skinny A. Unclaimed 9th/10th graders have the choice of going to any teacher they have for a current class. However, if the teacher has a specific review session planned and needs the space, the student may be asked to find a different classroom.
  • Once students are in classrooms after HR, 9th/10th graders will need passes from those teachers to go to other rooms. Those passes should be for academic work only or they can be used to send students to other rooms if the current room is full.

Permission forms for those juniors and seniors eligible to arrive to school late or leave early have been MAILED home.  These forms MUST be returned to the office before you are considered excused to be off campus during these times.  Remember that these forms are NOT permission to be off campus during the lunch hour.  Please stop in the office with questions.

  2. Second semester schedule changes may be made through the end of the day on Wednesday, January 25.
  3. Color Guard auditions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday before or after school at the middle school. Please contact Mrs. Rodenberg to sign up for an audition time.
  4. Anyone interested in being a student director or tech head for The Drowsy Chaperone should see Mr. Stephens or Mr. Andresen this week.
  5. Reminder – MVHS is a closed campus, including during lunch.  Seniors – Release forms were mailed home to your families last Thursday.  Your parent signature is required on that form and it needs to be turned into the office before you will be excused to either arrive late or leave early from school.  Until that time, a phone call to the office will be expected.  Juniors – if you don’t have a 1st or 7th period class, a form will be mailed home to you after all schedule changes are complete.  The release forms do NOT give anyone permission to be off campus during lunch.

  1. Karly Connolly has been named Mustang of the Week.Congratulations, Karly!
  2. On Jan. 20, the Social Justice class will hold a silent auction in the Commons from 4 to 8:30 pm to raise money for Chains Interrupted, an organization that fights against human trafficking in Iowa. The silent auction will include a bake sale and auctioning of high quality art pieces.  If you are able to bake something or donate an art piece, it would be very much appreciated!  If interested in baking, please contact Grace Pisarik.  If interested in donating a piece of art, please contact Clarissa Player.

Starting tomorrow, another option will be available for lunch.  It is a “Grab & Go” sack lunch that will consist of a PBJ Uncrustable Sandwich, string cheese, goldfish crackers, apple slices, and carrot sticks.  A carton of milk will come with the lunch, if desired, and a 4 oz. container of yogurt may be added at no additional cost.  The student’s lunch account will be charged the cost of a lunch ($2.90).  If the student chooses to take the “Grab & Go” in addition to a hot lunch, the student’s lunch account will be charged an additional $3.10. And as always, you can still purchase a PBJ as an alternative entree through the hot lunch line or singly as an a la carte item.  The best part of this option: you do not need to wait in the hot lunch line to “Grab & Go”.  A cooler will be set out by the trophy cases from which you may grab the lunch, write down your name and lunch number, and go.

If you truly don’t need any of the review sessions, you need to find a place to work quietly on your course work. The hallways need to remain clear. The library and Mac Lab are quiet work spaces. You may work collaboratively in the commons as long as you are not disruptive to others. If your behavior or noise level in the commons is disruptive, you will be placed in a classroom. Take advantage of the opportunities, manage your time, and get completely done with all of your course work.

1.    The sign-up sheet to ride the pep bus to the girls’ state basketball game in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 1, is in the activities office (room 117).  The cost is $5 to ride the bus and $10 for your ticket into the game.  YOU MUST PAY $15 WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR THE BUS.  The bus will leave at 8:45 am; the game starts at 11:45.  School will be in session that day.

2.    Uniform check out for girls’ track athletes is at 3:15 pm today, starting with the seniors. If you can’t be present, designate a teammate to check out your uniform for you.
