Mount Vernon varsity volleyball girls competed for the win against the Independence Mustangs in only three matches with scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-19. Independence started the game with a kill but the Mount Vernon Mustangs came back with a 3-0 run and gained some energy.
All the attention is on the six volleyball seniors. Senior Brooke Ellyson had seven kills throughout her game along with three aces. Senior Addison Gookin had seven straight serves with one of them being an ace. “I think the game went very well, the energy was high and with our new jerseys on it made it so much fun!” said Ellyson.
The first set started slow but the Mustangs quickly picked it up. Once they started to get a good lead Independence needed time to regroup so they called a timeout with the score of 15-5. Independence started to pick it up a little bit but it just wasn’t enough to keep up with the Mount Vernon Mustangs. Chloe Meester came in with the kill to end the first set 25-13.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs start the second set with an ace from junior Eryn Jackson. Jackson continued for a 4-0 run. Again Independence Mustangs were in need of a timeout after being down seven points. They quickly had to take another timeout once things were getting out of control with the score of 20-12. The Mount Vernon Mustangs take the win for the second set.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs struggled a little more than they normally do in the third set. Mount Vernon had to call a timeout when the score was 15-12 because with continuous errors Independence was catching up to them and they needed some time to discuss. Mount Vernon came out of the timeout ready to play and gained six points while Independence only gained two points. The Mount Vernon Mustangs pulled out a win of 25-19 with the last point from Jackson.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs had a total of 56 digs. Libero junior Jaden Rolland led the team with a total of 17 digs throughout the game, followed by senior Ellyson with 10. The team collectively had 41 kills. Meester ended the night with the lead of 20 kills, followed by a tie for seven kills between Ellyson and junior Paige Schurbon.
The Mustangs’ energy throughout the game was very crucial to how they played. “I think the energy against Independence was really good. We were really hyped and excited to play in our new jerseys,” said Meester.
The win against Independence added another victory to their recording making them 19-2. The seniors played their last home game together on Tuesday night.
