Carly Sebastian’s Recovery

Carly Sebastian, transferred to MVHS from Prairie this year.  Sebastian is currently a Junior in high school. “I enjoy the people here and the environment,” Sebastian said. Sebastian, 17,  has been playing softball since she was five years old. Sebastian was influenced by her dad to start playing softball, and ever since then she’s been in love with the sport. She loves the activeness of softball and says that it is a really good way for her to stay in shape. Sebastian also said she loves the adrenaline rush of softball that comes from hitting the ball really far or catching a fly ball.

Sadly, Sebastian got a devastating injury her freshman year that completely took away her sophomore season. She sprained both of her ankles which resulted in a year of recovery. During the healing process basic things were difficult for Sebastian, such as walking or even standing. Sebastian did a lot of her own physical therapy including stretching out her ankles, icing her ankles, not really being that active and just letting them heal over time in order to build them stronger.

The pause from the sport wasn’t all bad. “I enjoyed my time off to recuperate, get stronger, and gather my thoughts for how I’m going to attack  next season,” she said.

Sebastian is excited for her upcoming season to be able to play for Mount Vernon. Sebastian loves playing softball so nothing will get in the way of her dream to keep playing. Sebastian said her injuries should not affect how she plays or bat’s. But it might still affect the way she runs. “This shouldn’t be a big problem. I love playing the sport of softball and I will not let an injury hold me back,” Sebastian stated.

Sebastian has only one thing she is scared of next season. “I’m a little rusty so it will take me a little bit to get back into the swing of things,” she said. “I’ll just have to work extra hard and put in a lot of hitting practice with my dad, as well as fielding and catching fly balls.”

Sebastian is excited to get back out on the field after a year off. Sebastian is the most stoked for batting, but she is really prepared for playing in the outfield. Although Sebastian is nervous about playing on a new team with new people, she said“I’m just excited to get back on the field. After taking a year off my mind has got plenty of rest just as well as the rest of my body.”
