Senior-Sophomore Team Takes Victory at 2021 Powderpuff Game

After being taken down a notch by the Covid-19 pandemic, Mount Vernon High School returned in full swing trying to make up for lost time this homecoming week. Of course the pep assembly and dress up days brought a slew of excitement across the school, but students really showed off their school spirit at the powderpuff game. The senior/sophomore Pogues beat the junior/freshman Kooks 25-0.

This year’s theme was a reference to Netflix’s hit show “Outer Banks,” which takes place on an island off the North Carolina coast. The senior/sophomore team represented the Pogues who are the slum, working class teenagers of the show and the junior/freshman team represented the Kooks who are the preppy, upper class people in the show. The two groups are rivals throughout the series, making them the perfect choice for opposing teams in the intense competition of flag football.

Students, kids, parents, and staff had just gotten back from the parade and adrenaline was already high from the Homecoming coronation before the closing event even began. It had been cloudy throughout the night, but shortly before the game clock started, the sky opened up and it started to pour. Of course some of the crowd decided to leave, but the true fans stayed put and only seemed to become more amped up by the rain.

Fans sat with anticipation while the teams huddled together to talk about their plan of action with their coaches. “I loved the CC special play and how the coaches get super into it and get dressed up and bring headsets,” said senior Kasia Wiebel. Clearly they had thoroughly discussed their approach to take down the competition.

As the game began, players became more comfortable and aggressive and the roar of the crowd only got louder. The Kooks certainly put up a fight, but their strategy was no match for the quick turns and rapid speed of Pogues’ star player, Maia Bentley. Scoring two of their three touchdowns, Bentley helped carry their team to triumph. Although she is a senior, this was her first year participating in powderpuff and she said her favorite part of the game was playing offense. The other major contributor to the senior/sophomore team was Anna Hoffman, who scored the third touchdown.
