The Greatest Fans Are from Mount Vernon

The student section roars with excitement; the band plays loud with energy, people are cheering athletes’ names saying “you can do it, I believe in you.” These are Mustang fans, the people that cheer at practices, games, meets, and competitions. Mustang fans are teammates, coaches, classmates, friends, family, and even strangers. These people encourage athletes to succeed, they watch them improve, and they see all the hard work they do. They not only cheer for athletes at their best: when they reach a goal, get a personal best, or win, but they also comfort them when they fall short, make a mistake or lose.
I think I speak for almost every senior when I say I am very thankful that I’ve been able to call myself a Mustang.

Mount Vernon is a community full of supportive, kind, and encouraging people, making it a wonderful place to compete in sports. When the Mount Vernon volleyball team won a state title everyone came together to celebrate their incredible accomplishment. Fans missed school and work to come to watch the volleyball team play at the U.S Cellular Center, and everyone was extremely proud of each and every one of them. When the boys’ basketball team won the WaMaC Conference Championship everyone beamed with excitement knowing that all of their hard work finally paid off. When the boys’ basketball team didn’t make it as far as they would have liked to, the fans didn’t show any disappointment if they had any, because they knew the boys tried their best. Winning just about every single one of their games, working hard every practice, and always trying their best; Mount Vernon fans know that the boy’s basketball team played undoubtedly amazing this year.
It’s heartbreaking that senior spring athletes never got the chance to compete in their last sporting event due to having a shortened school year because of COVID-19. They never got the experience to have a sad, but celebrating hug from their friends and family after their last game. They never got the chance to hear “good job” one last time. It may seem like there are no Mustang fans insight right now, but they are there. They are cheering on the sidelines at home, anxiously waiting to see what outstanding future every senior athlete has ahead of them.
I think I speak for almost every senior when I say, I am very thankful that I’ve been able to call myself a Mustang these past few years. I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for the amazing memories and people I have met at Mount Vernon High School. I was a Mustang fan for eight years when I moved to Mount Vernon in the 5th grade, and I will always be a Mustang fan forever and always.
