Chalk the Walk is an annual festival held the first weekend in May in Mount Vernon. Each year, the streets uptown fill with artists working on chalk drawings in assigned 10 feet by 8 feet blocks. The festival ends with a competition, and the public works together on a large collaborative piece in the center of town.

This year, the collaborative piece recreated a colorful work called “Woodstock” by Ukrainian artist Veronika Demenko. It was chosen as a theme for the weekend in honor of the 50th anniversary of the music festival.

The winning entry was “Love Is Golden,” a portrait of a golden retriever chalked in patches of pastel colors, almost like tie-dye, with added peace signs, hearts and dots. It was done by two families: Jan, Kylie, and Bryce Pyatt and Lisa, Tyler, and Tori Durskey. They will be next year’s featured artists.
