On Thursday night the Mount Vernon sophomore boys basketball team played their last game of the season. The Mustangs defeated the Grinnell Tigers by a score of 50-39. The leading scorer of the game for the Mustangs was sophomore Jayden Meeker with 15 points. Meeker made three 3-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore Logan Griebel also had a great game scoring eight points.

The game started as a defensive battle with each team struggling to score. It was back and forth with neither team leading by more than two points. At the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs were up 14-12. During the second quarter, the Mustangs led by as many as five points, but the Tigers stayed in the game by hitting two 3-pointers, six total in the first half. At the half, the Mustangs went to the locker room down by one.

Both teams battled during the third quarter, but by the end, the Mustangs were ahead by two. The Mustangs took the lead in the fourth quarter outscoring the Tigers 17-8 to secure the victory. “We came out flat in the first half, but played well in the second half,” said sophomore coach Mike Kragenbrink

The sophomores finished their season with a record of 15-5. “Our goal for the season was to clear the bench and have everyone play in every game,” said Meeker. In the sophomores’ win on Thursday, they did just that, every player got the opportunity to play in the game.
