Three Mount Vernon wrestlers went to compete in the 2A State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Through blood, sweat, and close matches, all three would end up making it through to compete in Friday’s session.

Freshman Lincoln Holub, a 113 pound wrestler, had a tough first round. As a freshman, his nerves went all throughout his body when he walked onto the mat for his first match. He ended up losing his first bout 5-0 to the second seeded wrestler, but would come back to win 11-5 in the first consolation round. However, his second match wasn’t easy.

“When my eye split open it hurt really bad, but I wanted to beat the kid even more and keep wrestling,” Holub said. The Iowa State trainers in the arena gave Holub stitches soon after his match.

Paul Ryan (170) looks to go further in the state tournament after qualifying his sophomore year, and then placing his junior year. “I’ve been here before so I have more confidence every year,” Ryan, a senior, said. Ryan went into the match Thursday night aggressive taking his opponent down on the whistle. After one minute and 13 seconds, Ryan finished him with a pin with his headgear tight around his neck.

“I always have confidence in my own abilities, and if I keep that in mind walking on the mat, I shouldn’t have anything to worry about,” Ryan said. Ryan hopes to keep his season perfect as he contends for a title.

Ryan Clark (120) continues his great and final season with a win over Colby Wiederholt 9-7. With a takedown in the final seconds in the match, Clark sealed the victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Wiederholt took Clark down in the first seconds of the match, but he responded fast. “I knew it was a six minute match, so all I had to do was get my shots and keep pressure on him. I knew if I did that I would win the match,” he said. Clark Said

“I’m just trying to go out on the mat and have some fun in my last matches in a Mmustang singlet,” Clark said. In his final matches as a Mustang, Clark looks to wrestle on Saturday for a place on the podium.
