The Mount Vernon Marching Band has emerged as one of the premiere bands not just in Iowa, but in the nation as well. Band director Scott Weber has done an amazing job since he became the head band director in 2015. More people want to join because of the atmosphere that has been created by Weber and his students.
Mr. Weber has carried on past traditions from his old schools and created new ones while at Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon Band is a family atmosphere that allows everyone to be close and thrive as a team.
The marching band is also extremely successful. In 2016 they applied to march in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago. Bands from across the world come to perform in this event. The band was selected as the only team from Iowa. In 2018 they received an invitation to come back to perform again. This shows how Mr. Weber’s passion for the band program spans far beyond the high school band room and once again reaches a national stage.
The band has also won state awards over the years. They were awarded Division I at the State Music Festival three years in a row. They also won best Drum Majors in class 3A in 2018. The last three years the band has played “Piano Man,” “Moonwalk,” and “Thunderstruck” as their halftime performance themes.
